Ep. 138: Halloween Thrills and Chills at Birmingham's Alabama Theatre

Things are getting spooky at the Alabama Theatre. Gary W. Jones, house organist for the historic Alabama Theatre in Birmingham, joins us to preview what’s happening at the theatre this October. We’ll talk movies, special events and what audiences can look forward to during one of the best months to visit the 99-year-old movie palace. Then Gary takes us behind the curtain with ghost stories from the Alabama Theatre and its sister venue, the Lyric Theatre, just across the street. Are there still a few longtime “patrons” hanging around after the lights go down?

That's right. I was thinking, oh, Jesus. Nobody knows. Nobody knows. We're in Spaceballs mode, guys. Hi, members. She's a bass. She's a bass. I just hit record in the middle of all the shenanigans. Yes. It's all shenanigans. Exactly. That's all it is. I'm lucky we don't screw up the regular episodes with shenanigans. Sunday shenanigans. Hey, Farver, what's that weird restaurant with all the crap on the walls? You mean shenanigans? Yeah. So we're late getting started. It's going to be a short members episode tonight. It's a me size episode. There you go. I had to bring my monitor. I had to bring it up over here so I could see Kevin's room. Holy crap. That looks great, man. He popped in. Yeah, man. It's been a long way. And there's Addie. She's going to. Front to center, we've got the pet bed right there, of course. Very nice. We will definitely have our feature stars coming in and out here. I'm just the side of the thing. This is their show. Naya, it looks great. You're framed well. The light on you now is beautiful. I'm glad you said that because I hate it. I've had to adjust this. I've actually got a different bar. I was telling Bo, I couldn't get this thing right. He was watching me like stressing over adjusting it. But I've got a different bar coming that comes up and it's kind of like one of these that comes up and it's, and it's kind of like cross a bar that goes this way. So it'll diffuse better. Yeah. More like a panel. We're going to see how that goes, you know? Yeah, but you look great, man. The lighting in your entire room is on point. I feel like I'm in a terribly dubbed Chinese movie. There's like a delay. It's like I see y'all talking and then I hear your words afterwards. Jess is off about maybe ten milliseconds for some reason. I don't know what's going on. Yeah, we're like... Yeah, y'all are all doing the same thing. You know what? And when we watch this back, Jess and Kevin will probably be backwards again. Yeah. I don't know what happened in the last one. It's freaking StreamYard, man. They're messing with us. I'm looking at alternatives. Although there's not really a good alternative for what we need it for. But... the amount we're paying for the stream yard is getting on my nerves for the quality to be what it is well now it doesn't seem so bad but like when we got started it was like terrible like lag it's like i was hearing you and then i was seeing your lips move not a damn one of us can blame the internets anymore we all have gigabit everybody we can't blame the internets anymore As I say, AT&T's had its moments so recently. Yeah. We were without, well, and thankfully it was when we were going out of town. Last weekend. Last weekend. Like we didn't have internet, like went down like Friday morning. Yeah. And then. No, no, no. It went down Saturday morning. Saturday. Yeah. Yeah. That's right. Cause when we left to go to. Yeah. So that's fine. We weren't at home by the time we got home, everything was fine, but you know. Yeah. I'm good fortunate. I don't think we've had any long-term issues I can think of. Mm-hmm. I would show you the table over here, but I don't want to mess the camera up because, you know, Brock's got it set. But I put out a couple. There's more Halloween things that y'all can't see. But, you know, we did a little decorating around here. Yeah, I decided to. Oh, no, she's got happy meal buckets. I got buckets. Boo buckets. I got a lot of buckets. I have a lot of Halloween. Even Nixie texted me this afternoon and goes, hey, Home Depot's got the Halloween buckets again, the jack-o'-lantern buckets. I'm like, nope, we have enough. Thank you. What have we got, like three or four of them, I think? Yeah, we got about three. Have you got the glow-in-the-dark one from Lowe's? Oh, snap. No. That one's good. Is it Halloween deck? Yeah, while we're here, I'll look it up. I know mine's upstairs, but I don't want to have to run and go get it. We were antiquing last week, and I actually saw some of the original buckets. The McDonald's buckets. Somebody was selling them. They went a pretty penny for them. I understand. That was actually pretty cool to see them. Excuse me. The memories. The memories. Yeah. Bo just got hit by a nuclear flash. Yeah, Darth Vader is not on. Let me fix that here. Bo's in New Vegas tonight. There we go, yeah. There we go. So, Kev, we got rained on at Weird Al, by the way, a little bit. Yeah, yeah. I had dinner last night with Leanne and Jason, and I had a conversation with them, and they were telling me about, like, that they were glad that they bought merch or something because they were able to cover their heads with whatever it was. I was like, all right, cool. Brock came in with, oh, oh. Ooh, there you go. Oh, man. I like it. You guys have that. oh yeah well and it's glow in the dark guys have you gotten one yet oh they got seven yeah i've got one yes yeah seven bucks yeah pick up a store uh yeah let me see if it's available at our local one yeah this is saying pick up a hundred and eighty three available at our what are you doing with them boh decorating or having them. No, yeah. Just, hey, I have it. I'm a consumer. I am a consumer. I am a spooky consumer. I'll send that link to y'all. We're going to have so much stuff when we get to our new house. No, we're not, because we're selling it all. I mean, the decorations and stuff. You guys keep buying me new stuff. It's the same problem that I had with Victoria and I. It's like, yeah, we get rid of stuff, and then we buy stuff to replace it. Well, we'll try to get the stuff to replace anything once we get moved and decide if we want to replace anything. So when we were, the one thing we did last weekend is we went down, my, my son's, uh, senior homecoming was last weekend. So we went down and, and, you know, took all the pictures and did all the things. And while we were down there, we just were like, Hey, let's just, uh, let's go on down to Opelika where my old storage buildings are. And, um, We went down and we made one unit a keep, one unit a throw away. So we've got everything separated. So now we're ready to... Now we are ready to, sorry, the boot bucket six is throwing me off here on Lowe's. We're now ready to find somebody around Opelika, Auburn, and have them, you know, like a junk pickup, have them come to the storage unit and just haul stuff off. And then we'll be down to one unit. We're ready. She'll send me a message. She probably knows somebody that can do it. That would be helpful. Yeah. Yeah. So I said, we don't have the means of the trans, the abilities to haul things. I ain't got a truck. Unfortunately, it's going to come down to have to pay somebody to do it. Yeah. And hopefully that's fine. Hopefully they won't, you know, get us too bad, but I mean, it's near a college town, so, you know, there are going to be tons of, of services. Isn't there that cliche? Like the, well, I've seen the side, I think it was moving. It was college hunks moving junk or something. Yeah. College hunks moving junk. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. I remember that. You know, when you get down there and you're like, we're going to get after this thing. Yeah. And you open it up and go, boy, I already feel defeated. Yeah. Well, it was, but the weather was a lot better this last time than it was. Yeah. I didn't break a sweat till about mid afternoon. Wow. That's promising. yeah yeah but uh how many of these do you want jess just just get two just get just get two okay we don't even need the two but just get two i don't could you like put a could you put like a uv light on them and then just like keep them charged so they would still glow like even i think yeah i think you'd just put a uv light on them but they're good to go that's a good idea yeah Yeah, I got a couple little things decorated in here. Got some stuff in the kitchen. Got some stuff in the bathroom. Yeah, we have the Home Depot bucket. Got the Lowe's bucket. I'm trying to think where else. I'm just glad that, like, I guess Generation who enjoys the spooky stuff is we're the main consumers of stuff now, and they realize it. I just need the Christmas people to calm the frick down. Hey, they are. She's thawing. I know. She's thawing, man. She's getting ready. She's warming up the vocal cords. You think about it. Retailers, if they could get away with it, they would just have it all out all year long. Yeah. And we'd buy it all year long. Yeah. Oh, yeah. Impressive. I think it was in defense. Like, I think the problem is now, I guess, as I posted the other day, I was like, summer's illegal, illegal and unwanted occupation of fall needs to quit. I think that's the reason why I'm so grumpy about Christmas is because we never get to truly enjoy fall. It's like one week and then boom, it's Christmas. Yeah. Yeah. I think, I think that's where my grouchiness comes from. Cause I like fall. Fall is the best season. I don't know why I think it's the colors, maybe the aesthetics of it, but I do enjoy cold winter though. I do. I do that too. totally unrelated but we were antiquing today and i want to show you guys what i managed to find for the bar area um so we've got for folks that don't know and i haven't talked about it before we are our house is kind of like a three like a split level mid-century modern style house and the lower area has a bar and we're going to theme it after fallout we're going to like fallout theme it and we've got a lot of like fallout merch already and like stuff and we found this today oh nice new cool girl is that a poster or is that a full poster oh nice yeah and because i had been eyeballing one of those for it uh to begin with as it was uh for a while and i just we went to uh oh my god what the heck yeah you're you're fuzzy now oh my god you like bigfoot photography come on do it come on sasquatch all right Oh, God. I'm just blurry now. This is my life. I don't know. But anyway, hopefully it'll come back. Yeah, so we're definitely going to put that on the wall down there. Nice. It'll be kind of part of the decor. I've been eyeballing one of those for a bit now, and I was going to get one and get it shipped, but that one turned out to be a lot cheaper. I'm just going to frame it. Mm-hmm. Didn't you get that mini fridge or something you was looking at? I didn't know that. More than anything, because we're probably going to get a legit fridge down there. That was really cool looking, but at the same time, it'll just take up room. It's not practical, right? Because we will have actual alcohol down there. I actually want to be able to use it in the space. Come on, fix. Let me turn my camera off in case it comes back. All right. So, Jess. Yes. What? They're going to hold two of them. I can pick them up tomorrow when I get down to work. OK. And. I got my military discount, which saved a buck, saved a buck forty. Yeah. And I had a five dollar rewards at Lowe's for eight bucks for free. Eight bucks. We got two of them. Hey, nice. Yeah. Of the Home Depot or the of the home improvement warehouses, Lowe's tends to be my favorite. I love Lowe's. I like Home Depot, but Lowe's, just something about Lowe's is more comfy. Like, you know, like everyone chooses their, what do you want to say, your power tool brand. I think I've got sorted into House Cobalt, so, you know. What'd you put on your head to sort you? Yeah. yeah i did milwaukee everything green works milwaukee i know people who are very happy with milwaukee i said it's it's a little pricey it's good though they're really good too well i did my research on i was like for what i do with it and everything like yeah that's that's my brand so yeah i am team dewalt i have been got the yellow thirty years yeah but i i am not brand exclusive but that's just the one i go for that's what most of my power tools are is the wall Tool time with... It's tool time on Bama Geeks tonight. I don't think so, Jim. I will say I tend to prefer Lowe's, but with paint, I like Bayer paint more than anything. The paint color in here is Bayer, and that's Home Depot. That's their thing. Someone who's been employed by both of those companies, yeah. Some things are better at one or the other. I agree the Bayer paint is very good. Yeah. In my days of retail, yeah. I did the trifecta of the late-nineties, early-two-thousands hardware. It was Sears, Home Depot, and then eventually Lowe's. Nice. Well, it loses our store of choice just because it's like two minutes from us. I was about to say, yeah, you just throw a rock and you're there. Yeah. And Home Depot is in the ghetto. So, nah. No, let's just stay away. I've been to Home Depot. It's not that bad. Its location is not ideal. It's in the ghetto. I won't go. I'm amazed. You know, there's good people that use Home Depot there. But, you know, like, yeah, I'm still surprised that one is there. I am, too. I am, too. By the way, Alabama Adventure, you know, I sent you guys a picture. Yes, yes, yes. The giant stay pup. It has not been up since that day I took that picture. I think the drive-by happened. He's been flat in the grass every day. I figured either that or they got tired of turning them on or unplugging them or whatever. If you're not going to commit to it, just don't do it. Well, I think, I think didn't their fright, their fright event started this weekend. Yeah, I think so. Yeah. But they had to, um, I think they, they canceled Saturday or shut down or something. Cause they were worried about the weather. Yeah. Yeah. And then nothing happened. Nothing happened. I saw a little thing on Ghostbusters News scrolling through Facebook that they have a desk size inflatable stay puff for your desk at work. I was like, man, you get stay puff in all sizes. I'd like to get one of the little tiny desk size inflatable ones and just put it up against the really big giant one. Don't bother me or my son ever again. Yeah, it's kind of cute, though, but, you know. She hung a ghost outside of our door, on our door window, and I keep looking over. I keep thinking somebody's looking in. It's the ghost. It's the outline of the ghost. I'm still getting used to, like, when my door is over on this side, and whenever I come into this room, the Tusken Raider is, like, standing there. Yeah. It takes it used to, because you're like, whoa, there's somebody in the room. He's just standing there menacingly. Yeah, he's just standing there. Granted, he's not looking at you, at least. He's looking... know this like toward me here um so it's not as creepy but like it's still kind of like you see this it's like a i mean it looks like a pig like a warthog man basically with its tongue sticking out you know so it's just weird you know that's startling it's just weird speaking of which like there wasn't a i don't think there was a tuscan on stage yes No, there was a Jawa. That's one of the things I've been following because I've been actually thinking about going and doing some events with those guys again. They did a costume workshop a few weeks ago and they were cutting out Jawa fabric like crazy. I think they were trying to get some more people in costume. I fully expect there's going to be an influx of a ton of Jawas at the Weird Al concert. There was two, I think. One or two. I know I didn't pay much attention to them. I was trying to say this. There was two and then there was a couple of TIE pilots. Yeah, the TIE pilots. Yeah, I was too busy watching my kids enjoy it. Yeah, I'd say yes. That's with me. I kept looking over at the side watching my kid oversight about three quarters of the words to everything. I was just going to show you all this real quick. Brock gifted me this when we were cleaning out storage, the little firehouse statue. So I put it on my little shelf at work. So I got an Ecto and Stay Puff. Yeah. And the California Raisin. Yeah. There's my California Raisin down there. try to explain them to kids today like how big the california raisins were just a commercial it was like they were it was a commercial and we just grabbed we just loved it you know became our thing you guys remember the spam mascot the little the can of spam with the feet like it's like a super old school you remember that i actually found a plushie of him i've got him oh wow Yeah. I think I need to bring him upstairs and just like randomly stick. He used to sit on Boba Fett's shoulder, but you couldn't really see him. Yeah. I still need to mount a mini puff to my proton pack. I still hadn't done it yet. I need to do that. Talking about miniatures on stuff. Well, put him on the proton pack. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Guys, I'm about to install some software and I hope it doesn't kill things, but we're going to see. Oh man. I got to be able to affect the zoo of this. So. Well, I guess we'll have to. It's time for us to hop over anyway. Gary's going to join us here in a couple minutes. Yeah, that should fix it when the camera's completely shut off. So I told Gary, of course, we can discuss what they're doing at the Alabama Theater and the things. And I also told him that, I said, if you have any, I said, if you also want to talk about the haunted theories of the theater, we could all tie that in together. He said he's got two good stories, one about the Alabama, one at the Lyric, and both very, very personal. All right. How much Cheetos is involved? I told him, I said, yes, stories about both will be wonderful. He says, well, then as Kevin says, wind him up and let him go. There you go. I look forward to this. To be honest, I had forgotten that we were going to have Gary on, but then when I saw that you had posted the intro thumbnail, I was like, Oh man, we got Gary on. And then I had to, and then Victoria, she was like, how did you, how do you, how did you guys get connected with Gary? So I had to tell her the whole story. And I just reached out there and said, hi, hi. And then it became one big love fest. So, but we're going to, it was involved, you know? Yeah. Yep. So Gary is going to be waiting on us here in about a minute. So we're going to hop off and switch over there. Sorry for the short episode. Sorry we got in a little bit later than we had planned tonight. But as always, appreciate you. Love you guys. Thank you so much for supporting us and being part of us. And hopefully we can all. mingle one day soon again. Yeah. But I'm not blurry. That's extra scary to me. Okay, Mitch. So, yeah. We're going to hop off. We're going to go live. We've got to go get Gary. Love you guys. Bye.
